Ankle Tattoos

While the shoulder and lower back are popular places for tattoos, the ankle tattoo has come into vogue as a great place to put a tattoo.

An ankle tattoo brings your legs into focus and depending on the design, forces the eye to travel upward.

It's also a way to bring attention to a great pair of legs!

Ankle tattoos invite you to use a great deal of creativity, and there's no limit to the designs you can use.

Ankle Tattoos are for both Men and Women

Ankle tattoos are universal. Both men and women get them, and they go against the tradition of men getting dragons and women getting angels or butterflies.

Ankle tattoos seem to deviate from the usual standard cliche body art pieces and surprisingly few of them come directly from pre-designed tattoo flash.

Great Ankle Tattoo Ideas

For some reason there is a greater scope of ideas being used for ankle tattoos.

While flowers, butterflies and stars are staples of tattoo design, an ankle tattoo showcases unusual and original variations on these themes.

Case in point is the vine ankle tattoo above, which incorporates all three elements, put together in a very tasteful and unique tattoo.

Ankle tattoos also seem to reflect the personal tastes and interests of their owners.

Ankle Tattoo Placement

If you notice, most of these tattoos are not placed directly on the ankle. There are two reasons for this.

The skin over your ankle bone tends to wrinkle sooner than the rest of the skin on your leg and foot. This can cause the tattoo to distort.

And, any tattoos, done directly over a bone, can be very painful.
